Lower case j in Letter Gothic Bold. This assignment involved studying and experimenting with a single letter of a single weight of one type family. My favorite experiment involved cutting the j out of a book so that it was a stack of about 100 pages. I then drilled 3 holes and positioned posts so that the “book” could be fanned out in different configurations (see top card in lower right picture).

Eventually I hit upon a relationship of mother and child and used this in several different compositons as well as an animation (see bottom card in below image). The final part of the assignment was to collect and present all of our experiments. The patterns I had experimented with ended up lining the inside of the parcel containing the cards that each showed one experiment.
